Not everything is recyclable curbside, but many things can still be recycled.  Marin Sanitary Service, Marin Recycling Center, and Marin Resource Recovery Facility (MRRC) are part of a multi-faceted waste management and recycling operation located on a 103-acre land holding in east San Rafael.  In additon to these three facilities owned and operated by the Garbarino family, the property is home to the Marin Household Hazardous Waste Facility which is run in partnership with the City of San Rafael and the Marin Hazardous & Solid Waste JPA.

Collection of recyclable and Compostable materials through our curbside and drop off programs at these facilities is what allows Marin County to have the exceptional recycling rate  of 77 percent.  This achievement has had a  profound impact on the environment. Annually, MSS saves the equivalent of two million trees and 900 million  gallons of water.

Marin Sanitary Service (MSS) is responsible for all curbside collection services for residential and commercial customers.  In addition, it is the office for Debris Box Rentals and Confidential Document Shredding.

• Marin Recycling Center (MRC) is responsible for the Buy Back center and the processing of the curbside recyclables.  In addition, it is the home of the Environmental Classroom and is the faciity that manages Auto dismantling.
• Marin Resource Recovery Center is the indoor disposal area for residents and commercial businesses to self haul accepted materials.  These will be source separated and all recyclables will be pukked out and diverted from the landfill.
• Marin Household Hazardous Waste Facility is responsible for the collection of all HHW generated by residents and commercial businesses with small amounts of hazardous waste.  These materials are properly disposed of after recyclable components or reusable components are removed.
