“Marin Sanitary Service and its affiliates – Marin Recycling and Marin Resource Recovery – lead the nation in per capita recycling percentages. Their programs served as models when AB 939 was written, the law mandating recycling in the State of California. Their operation is an example of how an integrated waste management system can achieve waste diversion from landfills.”
--Steve Jones, Former Board Member, CA Integrated Waste Management Board

About

In 1980, Marin Sanitary Service designed and built the Marin Recycling Center to achieve a goal of zero waste, initiating the first countywide curbside collection program to operate in the United States.

recycling

Remodeled in 1996 to accommodate the increasing volumes of source separated recyclables collected at the curbside, Marin Recycling reorganized to become solely a processing facility with the purpose of receiving large volumes of recyclable materials and transforming them in to quality market-ready end products. The materials include waste paper, cardboard, aluminum cans, tin cans, glass bottles, and plastic bottles made of resin types #1 and #2.

Education

Marin Sanitary believes education must begin with the children if our zero waste values are going to survive into the future. That is why The Marin Recycling Center is toured by thousands of children each year through our Environmental Classroom. Devi Peri, the education coordinator, is approached by classrooms throughout Marin County who are looking for ways to educate their students on how they can reduce their impact on the environment.
