In 1980, Marin Sanitary Service
designed and built the Marin Recycling Center, initiating the first countywide curbside collection program to operate in the United States. Remodeled in 1990 to accommodate the increasing volumes of source separated recyclables collected at the curbside, Marin Recycling reorganized to become solely a processing facility with the purpose of receiving and processing large volumes of recyclable materials and transforming them in to quality market-ready end products. The materials include waste paper, cardboard, aluminum cans, tin cans, glass bottles, and plastic bottles made of resin types #1 and #2.
Valuable resources are diverted from the 250 tons of residential trash collected daily in Marin County. Over the past decade our collection and educational efforts have resulted in a 74% increase in recycling, surpassing the state mandate and saving the equivalent of two million trees and 900 million gallons of water.
Marin Recycling, along with the City of San Rafael and the Marin County Waste Management Joint Powers, operates a hazardous waste collection business. Please refer to Hazardous Waste for more information.
