Marin Sanitary Service is the community leader in intelligent waste management. We work hard to prevent the need for another landfill, to ensure that hazardous wastes are disposed of properly, and to keep our costs down. Over the past 10 years we have increased our recycling to 74%, surpassing the state mandate and saving the equivalent of two million trees and 900 million gallons of water.

Since Marin Sanitary Service was founded more than 50 years ago its evolution has closely paralleled that of Marin County itself. We have grown philosophically with our customers, and believe in the power of recycling to preserve our natural resources. As a result, a smaller percentage of trash is going to the landfill. Our three divisions work together to provide comprehensive collection, recycling, and education services:

Marin Sanitary Service – Provides weekly residential and commercial waste collection, street sweeping, and recyclables pick-up services.

Marin Resource Recovery Center – Accepts and processes non-hazardous materials through customized system of screens, conveyors, blowers, magnets, and hand-sorting. Also offers debris box rental.

Marin Recycling Center – Accepts and processes collected recyclables including glass bottles, aluminum and tin cans, newspaper, office waste paper, cardboard, and hazardous waste. Also provides community education through the Environmental Classroom.

History - Marin Sanitary Service (MSS) began in 1948 when Guido Zanotti and Joseph Segale left the Scavenger Protection Association in San Francisco and ventured into the growing bedroom communities of Marin County to start a new garbage service.

Guido and Joseph established a presence in Larkspur, San Rafael, Ross, and several unincorporated areas. They took on additional partners as the business grew, until 196l when the company was incorporated as a Sub-chapter S corporation. The company contracted with five jurisdictions to provide garbage service including the City of San Rafael, the Town of Ross, the City of Larkspur, Sanitary District #1 (Kentfield and Greenbrae), and Las Gallinas Valley Sanitary District (Terra Linda, Marinwood, and Santa Venetia).

In 1980, Marin Sanitary Service designed and built the Marin Recycling Center, initiating the first countywide curbside collection program to operate in the United States. Remodeled in 1990 to accommodate the increasing volumes of source separated recyclables collected at the curbside, Marin Recycling reorganized to become solely a processing facility with the purpose of receiving and processing large volumes of recyclable materials and transforming them into quality market-ready end products. The materials currently processed at our processing facility include waste paper, cardboard, aluminum cans, tin cans, glass bottles, and plastic bottles made of resin types #1 and #2. Valuable resources are diverted from the 250 tons of residential trash collected daily in Marin County. Over the past decade our collection and educational efforts have resulted in a 74% increase in recycling, surpassing the state mandate and saving the equivalent of two million trees and 900 million gallons of water.

Marin Recycling, along with the City of San Rafael and the Marin County Waste Management Joint Powers, operates a hazardous waste collection program for many of Marin County's residential areas and businesses. Please refer to the Safe Disposal of Hazardous Waste for more information.

In 1987, the Marin Resource Recovery Center (MRRC) was built to provide the citizens of Marin County with a clean, enclosed environment for the disposal of solid waste. The size of approximately three football fields, MRRC sorts through and recovers non-hazardous solid waste and extract commodities including yard waste, dirt, rock, concrete, demolition debris, appliances and other debris.

In 1994, the County of Marin granted a franchise for additional unincorporated areas around San Rafael. Marin Sanitary Service currently services more than 32,000 residential and commercial accounts, and recycles 74% of collected waste.
